The Ensign was announced in September 1957. This car had a smaller bore giving a capacity of 1,670cc and used the TR3 four-speed gearbox. The Ensign can be considered as an economy version of the Vanguard.
In 1959 to 60 Standard made just over 3,200 Ensigns with Vanguard Engines (2088cc). These were predominently exported to Canada or supplied to the RAF.
